War on Corona Virus: Center approves 15,000 crore emergency package for states

The Central Government has approved a package of Rs 15,000 crore under the ‘Kovid-19’ Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness to help States and Union Territories in strengthening the procurement and monitoring activities of essential medical devices and medicines. Initially, 7774 crore rupees will be used, while the remaining amount of 7226 crores will be used from time to time by 2024.

The Union Health Ministry in a letter to Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries and Commissioners (Health) of all states and union territories said that the Centre’s financial package with 100 percent financial support will be implemented in three phases from January 2020 to March 2024.

According to the letter, the Union Health Ministry is releasing funds to states and union territories under the National Health Mission for the first phase of implementation by June 2020. Among the activities that will be implemented in the first phase are Kovid-19 for development of special hospitals, Isolation blocks, ventilators with ICUs, strengthening laboratories, recruitment of additional personnel, etc. to States and Union Territories Support is included.

The ministry has asked states and UTs to use this money in purchase of personal protective equipment, N-95 masks and ventilators in addition to the resources provided by the Center. In the first phase, the project will be implemented from January 2020 to June 2020, in the second phase from July to March 2021 and in the third phase from April 2021 to March 2024.
